Crafty Supermarket at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center

we are loving the fact that there are plenty of options for local holiday shopping here in cincinnati! apart from supporting the amazing local community of artists, i often hear this :

“For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $64 stays in the local economy, creating jobs and expanding the city’s tax base. For every $100 spent at a national chain or franchise store, only $14 remains in the community.”

by supporting the local shops and artists, we create local jobs, keep our identity and the character of our city. so after checking out the city flea at the american can lofts, cheeks and i penciled in the crafty supermarket at the clifton cultural arts center on nov 19.

we noticed right away that there were art installations around the front lawn and on the trees. the wind sculptures made of sticks and string were by steve adkins and tom lohre (you can view photos of these at visualingual; yarn bombs – on the trees and branches, walls of the entryway, on the steps and on the ceiling – all care of the bombshells yarn (photos below).

inside the cultural center, it was buzzing. holiday shoppers lined up at the booths that filled up the main foyer as well as the different activity rooms. here are some vendors whose work we got to see and liked :

(above: orange fuzz boutique – makes soaps, lotions, cleansers, shaving kits using natural ingredients, and beer!)

(above L: hark + hark – creates jewelry and accessories for the home, like this moss-filled glass ornament; above R: literal “hand soaps”)

(above L: yelp booth offered free buttons and gift wrapping; above R: took a break with some fireside pizza – over the winter months, they will be housed at glendale’s bluebird bakery)

i was hoping to get more photos of all the other awesome vendors there, but it’s never a good plan to shop and document an event at the same time. for those of you still looking for more opportunities to shop local, here are a couple of events that you may want to check out before christmas:

city flea “wrapped up” – dec 10 , corner of 12th and vine streets at the gateway quarter, 11-5

meet rookwood pottery artists – dec 9 -11 , 1920 race street

happy shopping!
